Alison

Welcome back!

Today I want you to meet Alison. Friendly, caring and sweet are the words that come to mind when I think about this young woman.

Alison was so much fun at her session.  Even with us hurrying to get it all in before it rained, she was so easy going and a true delight to work with.

I loved the outfits that Alison brought to the shoot. For example, the flower top she wore was stunning. But, my favorite was that she wore her grandma’s pearls!!!

I asked Alison whether she had any advice to offer others who were getting ready to take senior pictures. This is what she had to share: Definitely have everything ready the night before! That way you can have everything together and you won’t have to stress about forgetting anything.

When I asked Alison how her overall experience was, she said “ It was awesome! I had so much fun and the whole process was so easy.”

After high school, Alison is planning on attending Adrian College

Best of luck to Alison. I know you’ll do wonderful things!

We had a great day shooting at Garfield Park in Indianapolis.  Plus, Sophia got to bring her lovable cat Calypso.

I loved the outfits that Sophia brought to the shoot. For example, her blue top with rain boots was adorable.

Best of luck to Sophia. I know you’ll do wonderful things!

Why do Senior Portraits Cost So Much?

Why do Senior Portraits Cost So Much?

Why do Senior Portraits Cost So Much?

I get this question a lot and I thought it would be a great topic to blog about.

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras and phone cameras, when people upload their photos to a local drug store and pick them up an hours later, we hear this all the time – How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $25 for an 8×10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store?

Let’s talk about why.

Easiest way to explain, you’re not just paying for the actual photograph (mind blowing right), you’re paying for time and expertise in creating the picture itself (time, equipment, software, shipping, packaging).

First, let’s look at the time that is involved. This is a must read portion (don’t skim over this)

For an one hour portrait session:

  • 30 minute consult meeting to plan your session
  • one hour setup, prepping, talking to clients, responding to emails/texts
  • one hour of travel to and from the session
  • one hour to upload photos from camera to computer and back up files
  • 4-5 hours of Photoshop time including sorting thru all the best images to do retouching acne, sharpening for print (or web which is separate), cropping, etc and then backing up all of these edited images
  • 2 hours for the photo review so we can talk to the client, answer your questions, receive order and payment, order products and prints,  and schedule delivery.

You can see how an one hour session easily is more than ten hours of work from booking your session to delivering your images. So when you see a Photographer charging a $150 session fee for an hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $150 / hour.

Now let’s talk about the experience of the photographer. On average a professional photographer pays $3000-$5000 per year to go to workshops to stay on the top of their game, learn new products, technics, poses, and more, that you get to utilize in your session. This does not include the cost of traveling to these workshops, food, transportation, hotels and time away from their business and family. Being a professional photographer is a HUGE investment in time and money on the part of the photographer. Becoming “good” is not an accident, it is hard work and loving what we do.

Now Equipment, we don’t use our iPhone or the latest gadget. These are great for selfies but when you are wanting quality, long lasting images you call a professional. The average professional camera body (no lenses just the body) ranges over $2500. Add in lenses and you are looking to double that amount. After camera comes the gear, lighting, reflectors, props, meters, stands, etc. This is just what is needed for the shoot. After the shoot, photographers have to purchase the best software, backups, computers, websites, image hosting, mobile apps, etc.

Is your head hurting yet, mine was when I first started 6 years ago and slowly started buying what was needed.

Think of it this way – how much do you pay to have your hair cut & styled? $100 plus for most of us, but a pair of scissors and over counter hair dye will set you back under $10. So why hire a professional? Because you want consistent professional results.

Conclusion

I hope that any of you that have taken the time to read this blog will understand a little more of what you are buying when you hire a professional photographer for your senior session!

Seven Style Staples

What’s your staple clothing piece?

It’s easier to create multiple outfit combinations when you are working with neutral colors. -The Chic Fashionista

You NEED these seven pieces in your closet

StapleClothing01

Back to school shopping can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s easy to get distracted by the floral summer dresses and patterned statement pieces. While those are always cute, focusing on the basics and finding key pieces for your back to school wardrobe will last longer and be worn more! Look for neutral colors with simple silhouettes because you can never go wrong with black and white and it’s extremely versatile! From there, accessorize with more colorful or exciting pieces to spice it up!

StapleClothing04

T-Shirt Dresses are perfect for high schoolers because they are easy and comfortable while still staying school appropriate especially during those warmer days, because they are so light and airy!

StapleClothing05

If you only buy one pair of shoes this back to school season, definitely pick up a black or white pair of converse or Vans. They’re comfortable, practical and they go with everything!

StapleClothing02

Look for a trendy, oversized bomber jacket for those chillier fall days! They are great to throw on in the mornings without sacrificing your stylish outfit! There are so many different styles and looks, you’re sure to find one you love!

Everyone knows jeans are an essential staple in any closet, but ripped and distressed denim is quickly taking over the fashion world! They add a casual, trendy vibe to any outfit. Whether, you buy them pre-ripped or DIY your own, get yourself a pair and rock them!

StapleClothing03

You can’t go wrong with plain, neutral-colored tops. They are so versatile, you can layer over them for more style points or wear them on their own for a more casual look!

Even though the free time of summer is over, the heat definitely isn’t those first weeks! Most schools follow dress codes so find a good pair of black shorts that will be appropriate for school! You’ll thank yourself later when it’s 100 degrees outside, and you’ve gone through every dress you own that week!

Finding and keeping up with a back to school style can be challenging as the homework and stress floods in but when you have a good set of staples to rely on, looking cute is much more effortless and achievable! Set some guidelines this shopping season to find more basics!
